Tattoo Pain Management Beyond Cream: What a VR Study Found
Share
Numbing cream isn't the only tool. A 2021 study tested virtual reality for tattoo pain.
Distraction is one of the oldest pain tools - and now there's data for tattoos specifically.
The 2021 pilot study
Researchers ran a live tattoo-shop experiment with 16 clients. Those using a VR underwater experience reported lower pain once the headset was on, compared with a control group, though pain rebounded after the headset came off [1].

VR won't replace numbing cream, but it's a neat, drug-free add-on - especially for the waiting or linework phases. Pair it with a quality topical for the best result.
Best stack: numbing cream for the needle + music or VR for the mind.
